On Juniper

jondf This is wide open music and even with so many moments of density it sounds uncluttered. It's patient and thoughtful but can still go through the feral contortions that music (in its truest sense) inevitably entails; the sound of two musicians who know how to listen and how to express the ineffable sonically. Favorite track: Fallow Season.

about

On Juniper is the culmination of two years suspended in the practice room. Originally scheduled to be recorded in March 2020, the duo abandoned their record to lockdown, then slowly reignited rehearsals in Jake’s basement on Juniper street with an appreciation for the solace and meditation offered in musical abstraction. By the time they finally made it back to the recording studio (for one day in October 2021), their compositions had eroded and in some places cracked open altogether.

The result is a duo sound that is expansive and thick, and which unfolds like colloquy and communion. Rough-hewn organicity is the organizing principle here, across the scales of time from waveform to songform: burred and gnarled tones; string and drumstrikes cutting across or floating above the metric grid in windblown swarms; structures that don’t cycle but progress through a succession of moods and modes like the day’s weather.

Electric guitar and clattering drums evoke an adolescent archetype: a door-kicking pleasure in unleashing and releasing. But rather than barreling forward, The Early works to sustain the cyclone, keep it swirling in place, taking slow pleasure in the glint and scintillation of each moment’s sonics, and following them along idiosyncratic, protean paths.
